This is Ford's own workshop manual for the facelifted Super Duty, 13,867 pages in a single searchable PDF. Every page footer reads “2020 F-250-550 Super Duty”, because Ford dates a book to the launch year of the range it covers. The three engines documented in it are the three this range was sold with, and both gearboxes appear, which is what confirms the span.

Ford's numbered section scheme is intact from end to end, so 303-01C is the 7.3L petrol V8, 303-01B is the 6.7L Power Stroke, 307-01B is the ten-speed automatic and 502-02 is the full frame. There are 165 distinct section numbers in the document.

One thing to know before buying. This is the workshop manual. Ford issues the wiring diagrams as a separate book, and the diagnostic procedures in here point to it by cell number, with lines such as “Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 14 for schematic and connector information”. So you get every removal, installation, diagnosis and specification procedure, and the engine and module electrical sections, but not the vehicle wiring schematics. We would rather say so on this page than have you find out after paying.

Sample pages from this manual

These are real pages taken from the document, so you can see exactly what you are buying:

Ford Super Duty 7.3L V8 engine front cover and spring removal procedure with colour illustrations

Ford Super Duty 10R140 ten speed automatic transmission system diagram with component table

Ford Super Duty front suspension four wheel drive snap ring and wheel knuckle installation illustrations

What you can repair with it

The illustrations are the thing that stands out. Ford moved to full colour rendering for this generation, so an exploded view arrives with each part shaded a different colour and a numbered table underneath giving the Ford part number and description. Compare that with the mono line drawings in the older books and the difference on a workbench is real.

The ten-speed automatic gets the largest share of the document. It runs from system operation and the component diagram through diagnosis, removal, full overhaul and installation, with the six-speed handled separately so you are never reading across from the wrong gearbox. Cooling and external controls each have their own sections for both boxes.

On the engine side all three units are documented independently, not squeezed into one shared section. That matters most for the 7.3L, which was new for 2020, and for the 6.7L Power Stroke, which has its own turbocharger section under 303-04C alongside its glow plug system, emission control and electronic engine controls. Body work is covered right down to sheet metal repair, with separate sections for front end, roof, side panel and rear end, plus vehicle-specific tolerance checks.

The driver assistance systems fitted to these trucks are here too: lane keeping, collision warning and avoidance, adaptive cruise, side and rear vision, parking aid and the tyre pressure monitoring system. Trailer work is well served, with the integrated trailer brake controller, Pro Trailer Backup Assist and trailer reverse guidance all appearing by name.

Manual language and format

English throughout, supplied as a single PDF of 13,867 pages. The text is searchable, so a section number such as 307-01B or a part name will take you straight there. It is a 665 MB download, which is large, so start it on a desktop rather than a phone and let it finish before opening.

Nothing needs installing and there is no activation. It opens in any PDF reader on Windows, Mac, Linux, tablet or phone.

Questions about this manual

Does this cover the 7.3L petrol V8?
Yes, as its own section, 303-01C, listed as “Engine – 7.3L 2V DEVCT V8 (239kW/320PS)”. That engine arrived for the 2020 model year, which is part of what dates this book and rules out earlier trucks.

Will it fit my 2019 truck?
No, and we would rather tell you plainly. The 2019 trucks are the earlier range, with different engines and the six-speed only. We publish a separate manual covering 2017 to 2019. This one is dated to 2020 on every page.

Are wiring diagrams included?
No. Ford publishes those as a separate book and this manual refers out to it by cell number. What you do get is the engine electrical, module communications network, module configuration and every electronic module section, which is where most diagnosis actually starts.

Which gearbox will my truck have?
Both are covered, so it does not matter for buying. The ten-speed 10R140 is the one fitted across most of the range from 2020, and the six-speed 6R100 appears in the book alongside it. Each has its own diagnosis, overhaul, cooling and external controls sections.

Does it cover the chassis cab and dually trucks?
Yes. Chassis cab, single rear wheel and dual rear wheel all appear by name, as do the F-450 and F-550. The Dana M275 and Dana M300 rear axles both have their own sections.

Is this a generic aftermarket manual?
No. This is Ford's own workshop information, written for franchised dealer technicians, with Ford part numbers, Ford special tool numbers and Ford torque figures. It assumes you have the vehicle in front of you and tells you the sequence, not the theory.

Please read before buying. This is an engine manual. It is not a full truck workshop manual, and there are no brake, suspension, steering, body, transmission or vehicle wiring sections in it. The main book is also International's document, not Ford's, so it calls the engine the VT 365 and the words “Ford” and “Power Stroke” do not appear in it. That is not the wrong manual. International built this engine for Ford and the VT 365 and the 6.0L Power Stroke are the same thing. A Ford-badged engine section is included alongside it so you have both sets of terminology.

The engine Ford sold as the 6.0L Power Stroke was designed and built by International Truck and Engine Corporation, who called it the VT 365. Ford never published International's engineering manual for it, and the Ford workshop manual covers the engine as one section among a hundred. This download is the other way round: 963 pages, almost all of it engine.

Three documents are included. The main one is International's own factory service manual, document number EGES-295-2, dated to the 2004 to 2006 model years and running to 412 pages. With it comes Ford's own engine section 303-01C from the 2006 F-250 to F-550 workshop manual, 239 pages, and the 2006 owner handbook for the truck, 312 pages.

Which vehicles this manual fits

  • Fits: the 6.0L Power Stroke diesel V8 as fitted to the Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty and to the Ford Excursion. The same engine is the International VT 365 in International and IC Bus chassis, and this is the manual for it under either name
  • Covers years: 2006, 2005, 2004
  • Earlier and later trucks: the 6.0L was fitted from 2003 to 2007 in the Super Duty and from 2003 to 2005 in the Excursion. EGES-295-2 is the 2004 to 2006 revision, so the mechanical work, the measurements and the torque figures apply across the run. Emissions calibration is the part that moved, and the manual itself carries separate emission label pages for 2004 and 2005 and for 2006, so check any emissions figure against your own vehicle
  • Engine: 365 cu in (6.0L), 4 OHV/1 cam-in-crankcase V8, bore and stroke 95 mm by 105 mm, compression ratio 18.0:1, VGT turbocharged with charge air cooling, Digital Direct Injection. Base rating 175 bhp at 2600 rpm and 460 lbf•ft at 1400 rpm, with the other ratings listed in Appendix A
  • Firing order: 1-2-7-3-4-5-6-8, with the right bank numbered 1, 3, 5, 7 viewed from the flywheel end
  • Language: English
  • Pages: 963 across six PDFs in one download
  • File type: PDF (supplied as a ZIP containing three foldered documents)

Sample pages from this manual

These are real pages taken from the files, so you can see exactly what you are buying:

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke VT 365 air flow diagram showing variable geometry turbocharger charge air cooler and EGR cooler

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke crankshaft camshaft and piston exploded view from Ford workshop manual section 303-01C

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke VT 365 cylinder head gasket and rocker arm carrier exploded view with numbered callouts

What you can repair with it

The cylinder heads are the largest single chapter, running from page 99 to page 156. It takes the valve covers off, lifts the high-pressure oil rail, strips the rocker arm carrier, pulls the heads, removes the valves, and then goes through fuel injector sleeve and glow plug sleeve removal and replacement. Reassembly gives the bolt sizes by name, M14 x 193 and M8 x 70, and a tightening sequence for the head bolts. Cylinder head applications are listed separately because the heads changed during the run.

The parts of this engine that people actually chase are all in here as procedures. The EGR cooler and the EGR valve have their own removal, cleaning and installation entries. The oil cooler has a disassembly procedure and a dedicated heading for coolant-side leaks. The high-pressure oil pump gets its own chapter with a flow schematic, the branch tube assembly and the Snap To Connect fitting. The turbocharger chapter covers removal down to the control valve, and includes the axial end play check and the free rotation and housing rub check, which is how you decide whether the unit is finished.

Below the heads it is a full overhaul book. Pistons and connecting rods come with the bore out-of-round and taper check, the bearing fit check and the piston pin inspection. The crankcase chapter covers cylinder deglazing, camshaft bushing measurement and the crankshaft timing. Appendix A holds the specifications, Appendix B the torques including a standard torque table and the special torques by assembly, and Appendix C every special service tool with its ZTSE number.

Ford's section 303-01C runs alongside all of that with Ford part numbers and Ford tool numbers such as 303-770 for the crankshaft rear seal installer and 303-1112 for the injection pressure regulator socket, so you can work from whichever numbering your supplier or your scan tool is using.

Manual language and format

English throughout. The download is a ZIP holding three folders. Folder 01 is International's service manual in four PDFs, split at the chapter boundaries but numbered continuously, so page 250 sits in Part 3 exactly where the contents page says it does. Folder 02 is Ford's section 303-01C as a single PDF. Folder 03 is the 2006 owner handbook. A read-me file at the top of the archive explains what each folder is before you open anything.

Every file is a normal PDF with searchable text, so you can look up a part name or a torque figure across a whole part in one go. Nothing needs installing and there is no activation.

Questions about this manual

Is the VT 365 the same as the 6.0 Power Stroke?
Yes. International Truck and Engine Corporation designed and built the engine and called it the VT 365. Ford bought it, badged it Power Stroke and quoted the displacement in litres. 365 cubic inches is 6.0 litres. The specification table on page 9 of the service manual lists it as “365 cu. in (6.0L)”, which is the two names sitting in the same line.

Who makes the VT 365 engine?
International Truck and Engine Corporation, whose copyright line appears at the foot of every page of the service manual. The same company later became Navistar. Ford assembled the trucks but did not build this engine.

Why does the manual never say Ford or Power Stroke?
Because it is International's internal document, written for their own technicians and their own chassis. It is the more detailed of the two books for exactly that reason. Ford's own engine section is included in Folder 02 for anyone who needs the Ford wording and Ford part numbers.

Does it cover the problems this engine is known for?
It covers the work, not the reputation. A service manual will not tell you which years to avoid, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What it does have is the procedure for every component that commonly comes off one of these engines: EGR cooler, EGR valve, oil cooler including the coolant-side leak check, cylinder heads with the bolt tightening sequence, fuel injectors and their sleeves, the high-pressure oil pump and the STC fitting, glow plugs and the glow plug relay, and the turbocharger with its condemnation checks.

Does it include wiring diagrams for the truck?
No. The Engine Electrical chapter covers the engine's own harness, the ECM and IDM mounting, the glow plug harness and every engine sensor by name, but there are no vehicle wiring diagrams. Those are in our Ford Super Duty workshop manuals, which cover the truck by model year.

I have a 2007 truck. Will this help?
For mechanical work, yes. EGES-295-2 is the 2004 to 2006 revision and the engine's mechanical build did not change after it. Treat the emissions material with care and check any calibration figure against your own vehicle, because that is the part that moved year to year.

Do I need the truck workshop manual as well?
If the job is inside the engine, no. If the job involves anything bolted to the truck rather than the engine, then yes, because none of that is here. The 2006 owner handbook in Folder 03 covers the everyday side, warning lights, capacities and maintenance intervals, but it is not a repair book either.

This is Ford's own service information for the second generation Super Duty, the trucks built around the 6.7L diesel. It is not a scanned book. It is the factory system as Ford's technicians used it: 1,499 linked pages that open in a web browser, 5,263 illustrations and 106 numbered sections, with a contents tree down the left and an alphabetical index running to roughly 1,495 entries. The manual titles itself “2012 F-250, 350, 450, 550 Super Duty Workshop Manual” and individual procedures carry revision dates, the engine assembly section reading 02/16/2012.

Which vehicles this manual fits

  • Fits: Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty. Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab are all documented, as is the Chassis Cab, and dual rear wheel trucks are covered through the axle and wheel sections
  • Covers years: 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011
  • Engine options: all three, each with its own set of sections. 6.2L (2V) petrol V8, 6.8L (3V) V10, and the 6.7L diesel. The diesel additionally gets its own engine cooling section, a powertrain secondary cooling section, a fuel cooling system section and a glow plug system section
  • Diesel emissions work: this is the DEF era and the manual treats it properly. The reductant tank is referenced around 200 times, with the reductant pump and reductant injector documented, alongside the diesel particulate filter. There is a manual regeneration procedure with the engine speeds spelled out
  • Gearbox: both automatics have their own sections, TorqShift and TorqShift6, plus a Tremec five-speed manual with clutch and clutch controls, transmission cooling and external controls
  • Rear axles: Dana 80, Dana S110 and S130, and the Ford 10.50-inch ring gear, with full floating wheel hubs documented in both Dana and Ford forms
  • Braking: anti-lock braking is documented together with stability control, and there is a separate auxiliary brake system section
  • Power take-off: PTO equipped trucks are covered, with the term appearing in around 180 places through the transmission and controls material
  • Language: English
  • Pages: 1,499 linked HTML pages, 5,263 illustrations and 24 embedded PDF exploded views
  • File type: HTML manual, supplied as one ZIP you unpack and open in a browser

What you can repair with it

The 6.7L diesel is the reason most people come looking for this manual, and it is the best served engine in the book. It has its own full engine section with specifications, in-vehicle repair, removal and installation, disassembly and assembly, and the assembly pages open with a special tools table listing the engine stand, the 6.7 litre engine adapter, the camshaft remover and installer and the rest by Ford tool number. Around it sit a dedicated diesel cooling section, a powertrain secondary cooling section that the petrol engines do not have, a fuel cooling system section, the turbocharger, and the glow plug system.

Emissions hardware is where this generation earns its reputation, and the coverage is real. The reductant tank, pump and injector are all documented, along with the diesel particulate filter, and there is a manual regeneration procedure that takes you through the process with target engine speeds and a warning about shop exhaust extraction. If you are chasing a DEF warning or a truck stuck in a derate, that material is the difference between guessing and working to Ford's own steps.

Transmission coverage is unusually complete because this generation spans two automatics. TorqShift and TorqShift6 each get their own section, so you work from the one that matches your truck instead of reading around the other, and there is a Tremec five-speed manual documented with its clutch and controls. Transmission cooling and the external control system are separate again.

Underneath, the axles are organised by hardware, so the Dana 80, the Dana S110 and S130, and the Ford 10.50-inch ring gear each have their own section, with full floating wheel hubs in both Dana and Ford forms. Braking brings anti-lock and stability control together in one section and adds an auxiliary brake system section for the exhaust brake. Body work runs from front end panels and closures through to a body repairs section, a roof opening panel section and bumpers, and there is a maintenance schedule section that the older Super Duty books do not include.

Manual language and format

Everything is in English. This one is worth reading carefully because it is not a PDF. It is Ford's HTML service information, and it arrives as a single ZIP. Unpack the folder, open front_page.htm in any web browser, and you get the manual as a technician saw it: a contents tree down the left, quick links to the introduction, the master DTC chart, specifications, metrics, torque wrench adapter formulas and acronyms, and an alphabetical index of roughly 1,495 procedures. Clicking through works offline with no internet connection, and the 24 exploded views that Ford supplied as PDFs open in the same browser. It runs from a folder on Windows, Mac or Linux.

Questions about this manual

How do you manually regen a 6.7 Power Stroke?
There is a manual regeneration procedure in this manual, set out as numbered steps. It includes the detail people miss, such as the instruction not to attach shop exhaust extraction with vacuum to the tailpipe, and the engine speeds to hold, gradually increasing to 1,800 to 2,000 rpm with the transmission in neutral once regeneration completes. Follow Ford's steps rather than a forum summary of them.

What is the DEF problem with the 6.7 Power Stroke?
There is no single fault, which is why a manual helps more than a list of symptoms. The parts that generate most complaints are all documented here: the reductant tank, which the manual refers to around two hundred times, the reductant pump, and the reductant injector, plus the diesel particulate filter and the emission control section. Diagnosis and testing material sits alongside removal and installation, so you can work out which component is actually at fault before buying one.

What transmission is in a 2011-2016 Super Duty?
One of two automatics, and the manual covers both separately as TorqShift and TorqShift6, so check which is in your truck and work from that section. A Tremec five-speed manual is also documented, with clutch and clutch controls, and there are separate sections for transmission cooling and for the external control system.

Is this a PDF manual?
No, and it is better than one for this generation. It is Ford's own HTML service information, so instead of scrolling a single enormous file you click through a contents tree and an alphabetical index of around 1,495 procedures, exactly as a dealer technician would. It arrives as one ZIP, you unpack it and open front_page.htm in a browser, and it works offline. The 24 exploded views Ford issued as PDFs are included and open from the same pages.

Will it cover my 2016 F-250?
Yes. Ford dated this edition to 2012, in the middle of the run, and the second generation Super Duty carried the same three engines, the same two automatics and the same axle range from 2011 until the new model arrived for 2017. If your truck is a 2017 or later, this is the wrong book and you want the next generation instead.

This is Ford service information for the fourth generation Super Duty, the trucks Ford redesigned for 2017, compiled into one searchable PDF of 10,643 pages. It is the largest manual we sell. Inside are 81 documented systems and more than 10,200 figure captions, each illustration carrying Ford's own attribution line beneath it. The organisation is by system and component, not by chapter, so you go straight to the part you are working on, and each topic opens with its specifications and torque figures before the procedures begin.

Which vehicles this manual fits

  • Fits: Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty, pickups and Chassis Cab. Where a system differs by model the manual says so in the topic title itself, for example the Ford 10.50-inch rear axle is documented for F-250 and F-350, while the Dana full floating wheel hubs are documented for F-350 to F-550
  • Covers years: 2019, 2018, 2017
  • Engine options, each with its own mechanical section: the 6.2L (2V) petrol V8, the 6.7L diesel, and the 6.8L (3V) V10 which the manual documents specifically for F-450 and F-550
  • Diesel emissions work: the reductant tank is referenced in over 230 places, with the reductant injector documented alongside the diesel particulate filter, and there is a manual regeneration procedure carrying Ford's own warnings about tailpipe temperature and fuel sulphur content
  • Gearbox: TorqShift and TorqShift6 are both covered, with separate topics for the transmission cooler and the external control system
  • Braking and stability: the anti-lock brake system is documented together with the Vehicle Dynamic System, and there is a dedicated trailer brake system topic referenced in more than 150 places
  • Steering: Hydraulic Power Assist Steering, with the steering column, column switches and steering linkage each documented separately
  • Electrical reference: a Fuse and Relay Information topic, module communications network and module configuration, and the multifunction electronic module
  • Language: English
  • Pages: 10,643 in a single PDF
  • File type: PDF

What you can repair with it

The three engines are kept properly apart. The 6.2L petrol V8, the 6.7L diesel and the 6.8L V10 each have their own Engine Mechanical topic, and the V10 one is written for the F-450 and F-550, which is exactly the truck it is fitted to. Around them sit separate topics for ignition on the petrol V8, starting systems split between petrol and diesel, gasoline engine cooling, a diesel powertrain secondary cooling topic that the petrol engines do not have, the turbocharger, and a fuel cooling system.

Emissions work on the 6.7L is the reason many owners buy a manual for this generation, and it is properly covered. The reductant tank appears in over two hundred places, the reductant injector has its own coverage, the diesel particulate filter is documented, and the manual regeneration procedure comes with Ford's own cautions, including the warning to only initiate one with the tailpipe clear of obstruction and the note that ultra low sulphur diesel is required to avoid poisoning the catalyst.

Underneath, the axles are documented by what is actually fitted rather than by badge. The Ford 10.50-inch ring gear rear axle is covered for F-250 and F-350, full floating wheel hubs appear in a Dana version for F-350 to F-550 and a Ford version for F-250 and F-350, and there are separate front suspension topics for rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, plus the transfer case and four-wheel drive systems. Braking brings the anti-lock system together with the Vehicle Dynamic System, and the integrated trailer brake system has a topic of its own.

Body and cabin coverage is fuller than most manuals of this size manage. There is a body repairs topic, front end body panels, closures, the pickup bed and platform body, bumpers, a roof opening panel, seating, restraints and glass. On the electrical side you get fuse and relay information, the module communications network with module configuration, the multifunction electronic module, and the instrumentation and message centre.

Manual language and format

Written in English and supplied as a single PDF of 10,643 pages. The text layer is intact, so a part number, a torque value or a component name can be searched and found directly, and any page prints on its own. It opens with any standard PDF reader on Windows, Mac, tablet or phone. At 395 MB it is a large download, so use a wired or stable connection and save it somewhere with room.

Questions about this manual

What engine is in a 2018 F-250 Super Duty?
Either the 6.2L petrol V8 or the 6.7L diesel, and this manual documents both with a full Engine Mechanical topic each. If you are working on an F-450 or F-550 there is a third, the 6.8L V10, which the manual covers in its own topic named for those two models. Each engine also gets its own fuel charging and controls coverage, so you are never reading around an engine you do not have.

Does this cover the F-450 and F-550 chassis cab, or only the pickups?
Both. Chassis Cab is referenced throughout, and where a system genuinely differs by model the manual names the models in the topic itself. The clearest examples are the V10 engine topic written for F-450 and F-550, the Dana full floating wheel hubs for F-350 to F-550, and the Ford 10.50-inch rear axle for F-250 and F-350.

What transmission is in a 2017-2019 Super Duty?
TorqShift, in one of two forms, and the manual covers both as TorqShift and TorqShift6 with the transmission cooler and the external control system as separate topics. Check which is in your truck before you start, because the two are documented apart from one another and not merged.

Will this cover my 2020 Super Duty?
No, and it is worth being clear why. Ford revised the Super Duty for 2020 with a new 7.3L petrol V8 and a ten-speed automatic. Neither appears anywhere in this book, not once, which is exactly what you would expect of a manual written for 2017 to 2019. If your truck is a 2020 or later you need the later edition.

Does it include fuse and relay information?
Yes, as a topic of its own, alongside the module communications network, module configuration and the multifunction electronic module. Combined with the component testing topic, that is the material most owners need when chasing an electrical fault instead of replacing a mechanical part.

This is Ford's own workshop manual for the chassis underneath your motorhome, 6,567 pages in a single searchable PDF. Ford never sold the F53 as a finished vehicle. It left the factory as a frame with running gear, and the manual's VIN table spells out what the code means: “F53 – Recreational Stripped Chassis (Motorhome)”. A coachbuilder then put a body on it. That division is the single most useful thing to understand about this book, because everything Ford was responsible for is documented here in factory detail, and everything above the frame rails belongs to whoever built your coach.

Which vehicles this manual fits

  • Fits: Ford F53 motorhome chassis, whatever badge is on the coach. Ford supplied it as an incomplete vehicle to the body builder, so this manual covers the Ford half: frame, engine, transmission, axles, brakes, steering and the chassis electrics
  • Covers years: 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000
  • Engine: the 6.8L Triton V10. The manual's VIN engine codes make this explicit, and only one of the three codes names the motorhome: “S – 6.8L, SOHC, EFI, V10, Gas, F-Series/Excursion/Motorhome”. Its firing order is 1-6-5-10-2-7-3-8-4-9
  • Its own frame section: section 502-02 carries three separate frame assemblies, one for the F-Super Duty, one for the Excursion and one headed “Frame Assembly – Motorhome”, illustrated with twenty-five numbered callouts and part numbers down to F81D-5020-A for the front crossmember
  • Frame modification rules: there is a Welding Precautions section written for this chassis, stating that welding to the frame flange is not recommended and directing you to the vertical side instead, plus instructions for drilling holes in the horizontal frame flanges
  • Gearbox: 4R100 automatic, with its cooling circuit and external controls covered in separate sections
  • Axles and brakes: Dana 80, Dana S135 and the Ford 10.50-inch ring gear, full floating wheel hubs in both Dana and Ford forms, and anti-lock braking documented separately for rear-wheel and four-wheel systems
  • Language: English
  • Pages: 6,567 in a single PDF
  • Also included free: Ford's official 20 page specification sheet for the 2019 F53 chassis, with gross vehicle weight ratings from 16,000 to 22,000 lb, five wheelbases, axle, brake, spring and tyre data. It is bonus reference material for the platform and the figures in it describe a 2019 chassis, so do not apply them to a 2000-2004 one. The download explains this, and your own ratings are on the chassis data plate
  • File type: ZIP containing the workshop manual PDF, the bonus specification PDF and a read me

Ford F53 chassis welding precautions and frame drilling instructions sample page

Ford VIN identification codes showing F53 Recreational Stripped Chassis Motorhome and 6.8L V10 engine code

What you can repair with it

Start with the frame, because on a motorhome that is where the awkward jobs live. Section 502-02 gives the F53 its own frame assembly drawing, separate from the truck and the Excursion, with the crossmembers, gussets and stub assemblies numbered and listed by part number. Alongside it sits a Welding Precautions section written for this chassis, which tells you not to weld to the frame flange and to use the vertical side instead, and a procedure for drilling the horizontal flanges properly. If you are fitting a new appliance bay, repairing a sagging extension or chasing corrosion in the rails, those pages are worth the price on their own.

The V10 gets a full engine section with specifications, in-vehicle repair, removal and installation, disassembly and assembly, and its exploded views name every component with a Ford part number underneath. Fuel charging and controls, ignition, emission control, the accessory drive, intake air and evaporative emissions all have their own sections, and electronic engine controls are separated so you read the gasoline material and not the diesel.

Behind the engine, the 4R100 automatic is documented along with separate sections for its cooling circuit and its external controls. Underneath, the rear axles are organised by type, so the Dana 80, the Dana S135 and the Ford 10.50-inch ring gear each have their own coverage, and full floating wheel hubs are documented in both Dana and Ford forms. Anti-lock braking is split between rear-wheel and four-wheel systems, and the steering, power steering, column and column switches each get sections of their own.

What is not here is anything the coachbuilder fitted. Ford handed over an incomplete vehicle, so the habitation body, the windows in it, the roof, the appliances, the leisure batteries and the interior are all outside this manual's scope, and you would need documentation from whoever built the coach for those. This book is the Ford half, in Ford's own detail.

Manual language and format

Questions about this manual

What does F53 actually mean?
It is Ford's chassis code, and the manual's own VIN table defines it as “Recreational Stripped Chassis (Motorhome)”. Ford built the frame, drivetrain and running gear, shipped it as an incomplete vehicle, and a coachbuilder mounted the living quarters on top. So your motorhome has two makers: the Ford underneath, which this manual documents, and the coach above it, which it does not.

What engine is in a Ford F53 chassis?
The 6.8L Triton V10. The manual settles it in the VIN engine codes, where only one of the three names the motorhome: “S – 6.8L, SOHC, EFI, V10, Gas, F-Series/Excursion/Motorhome”. Its firing order is 1-6-5-10-2-7-3-8-4-9. The 5.4L V8 and the 7.3L diesel listed in the same table were F-Series and Excursion engines, not motorhome ones, though both sections are in the book anyway.

Can I weld or drill the F53 frame?
Carefully, and the manual is specific about it. There is a Welding Precautions section for this chassis which states that welding to the frame flange is not recommended and points you to the vertical side of the rail instead, and there is a separate procedure covering where and how holes may be drilled in the horizontal frame flanges. Anyone mounting equipment to the rails should read those pages before cutting anything.

Will this cover the living area of my motorhome?
No, and no Ford manual will. Ford's responsibility ended at the chassis, so the coach body, its windows and roof, the appliances, the plumbing and the interior fittings were all installed by the company that built it, and their documentation is where those answers live. What you get here is complete factory coverage of the part that drives, steers and stops.

Does it apply to my 2003 motorhome?
Yes. Ford dated this book to 2000 and the F53 package ran on through 2004 with the same V10, the same 4R100 automatic and the same frame family, so the sections apply across that span. Bear in mind the model year on your paperwork may be the coachbuilder's rather than the chassis year, and the two are often a year apart, so check the Ford VIN on the chassis if you want to be certain.
